Morphological Characteristics
Flagellate cells, rhomboid, surrounding an internal silicon skeleton composed of solid elements that partially enclose the nucleus. The skeleton’s structure is elongated anteriorly and posteriorly, and has secondary branches. The skeleton of this genus is asymmetrical, i.e. the structure is complete only on one side. The nucleus contains condensed chromatin. The two flagella are inserted apically and are of unequal length. Cell division is apparently asexual, with the duplication of the skeleton preceding the separation of the cells.
Distribution
Typical of coastal and temperate waters.
