Lily-pad begonia is native to tropical regions of Central America where it thrives in the understorey of wet forests. The species has spread to other areas, often as an ornamental, and is established in certain parts of Oceania, South America, and Asia. In some regions, lily-pad begonia is sometimes thought to be invasive and may have an impact on local ecosystems, although these occurrences are infrequent.
