They are part of the cryptobenthic fish community – a group of species that are small-bodied, maintain nearly constant contact with the reef surface, and rely on crypsis to avoid predation. Though small, the species in this group play an important role in energy transfer and turnover of nutrients within rocky reef ecosystems.
