TACLOBAN CITY – A community in Alangalang, Leyte was placed under lockdown on Wednesday to prevent the potential spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The local government in a Facebook post said the directive was enforced in one area of Barangay Holy Child 2 effective noon of August 12.

The temporary lockdown will last from two to three days while waiting for the swab results of individuals who had exposure to its confirmed patient, a three-year-old daughter of the 38-year-old policeman who earlier tested positive for the virus.

As directed, all residents in the community are strictly prohibited to go out of their respective homes, while non-residents will not be allowed entry into the village.

The local government said the Philippine National Police and village officials will set up a checkpoint to enforce the temporary lockdown.

To date, the town has confirmed a total of 27 Covid-19 cases, based on the DOH monitoring report.

Meanwhile, Eastern Visayas has recorded a total of 1,363, including 927 recoveries and four deaths in Leyte, Biliran, and Samar.

Among provinces, 614 were recorded in Leyte, 299 in Samar, 169 in Southern Leyte, 60 in Biliran, 46 in Northern Samar, and 17 in Eastern Samar.

The cities of Ormoc and Tacloban have 79 total cases each.

The region reported its first patient on March 23 and from just 40 cases on June 1, the number has surged significantly due to testing of returning residents, including overseas Filipino workers and locally stranded individuals, mostly from Metro Manila and Cebu. (PNA)
