Fernandoa adenophyllum
Tall tree with large yellow bell-shaped flowers borne in erect clusters. The calyx is velvety to touch. Tree is deciduous.
Inside a government housing estate with sprawling grounds.
Much frequented by Sunbirds and bats. Reportedly medicinal.
@ Richard Frazier.
The name you have suggested and the one I have given are synonyms.
Synonyms: Bignonia adenophylla, Fernandoa adenophylla, Spathodea adenophylla
And Sunbirds do frequent this flower I did not say pollinate.
Thanks for your comments though.
The Purple sunbird does not pollinate this flower. Rather it takes nectar from the base, an example of nectar robbery. This species is described as being bat-pollinated.
Definitely looks bat-pollinated. I thought it might be Crescentia cujete (Calabash Tree), but the latter is cauliflorous.
