Samsung SF-650 Review

Overview:

The Samsung SF-650 fax machine is based on Samsung’s ML-1900 line of hardware, and offers the same affordability and low cost per page combined with a full range of fax features including a dedicated handset and number pad. The unit is fully capable of executing all print, copy, scan, and PC fax needs as well, making it an excellent low cost solution for the home desktop or small office.

Pros:

The inclusion of a dedicated handset and number pad makes faxing fast and easy when using the Samsung SF-650. It also includes 7 MBs of fax storage space which is capable of holding up to 500 pages worth of data. With fax page memory such as this, users do not have to worry about missing important faxes due to paper outages or simultaneous operation of the printer. Another semi interesting feature found on the unit is a delay send mode that has a variety of applications, most notably being the ability to send all outgoing faxes at off peak times, thus saving on phone charges.

The unit’s built in automatic document feeder can hold up to 20 sheets of input, which is more than sufficient for such a compact device. Other paper handling specifications include a full sized 250 sheet paper tray and an 80 sheet output capacity. Unfortunately, the Samsung SF-650 does not include a multi purpose bypass slot, though it supports special media in the standard tray.

Cons:

Like the other models in the hardware line, the Samsung SF-650 suffers from a distinct lack of overall print performance. With top print speeds maxing out at 22 pages per minute for A4 sized paper and 23 pages per minute for letter sized, the unit falls behind other printers and fax machines in this price range. Similar four and five in one units are available in inkjet models for the same price, yet these inkjets can print in full color with five and even ten page per minute performance differences, making going with this laser printer a wise decision on when dealing with high print volume in black and white.

The unit’s copy speed is also lacking, with only 18 pages per minute possible for A4 paper and 19 copies per minute for letter sized output. Another major downside to the Samsung SF-650 is its lack of a multimedia bypass slot. While the other printers and multifunctional units in this hardware series provide an additional paper input slot, the 650 does not, making it impossible to bypass the standard paper supply when printing to special media.
