A stunning, small, clustering, terrestrial bromeliad, newly described in 2008 from shrublands on dry, rocky slopes at altitudes between 1000 and 2500 m in the Mexican states of Querétaro and Hidalgo. It forms small rosettes of succulent, silvery white leaves with red spines along the margins. Hardy to drought and cold, Hechtia lepidophylla is best grown on very well drained ground in the temperate garden in USDA Zones 8 and above.
