A beautiful, small, evergreen tree or large shrub with simple, leathery, oval leaves that have a slightly wavy margin. Lithraea caustica is native to dry matorral forests in central and southern Chile. The Mapuche people in Chile consumed the fruits fresh or as a beverage mixed with other fruits. It makes a lovely, pest free ornamental tree but its leaves and bark (not the fruits), can cause severe dermatitis in some people, similar to the effects of poison ivy.
