MERIDIAN - Gerhard August “Gary” Hieb, age 93, of Meridian, and formerly of Rupert, died Sunday, December 10, 2023, at Grace Assisted Living in Meridian.
Gary was born November 22, 1930, in Hague, North Dakota, to John W. and Christina Heyne Hieb. He was baptized on December 26, 1930. Gary attended school in North Dakota prior to moving to Idaho with his family in 1941. He attended school in Rupert prior to his military service.
On September 5, 1954, Gary married JoAnn Archer and they made their home in Rupert. To this union was born a son, Alan, in 1959, and they adopted their daughter, Jan, in 1967. Gary’s family was the most important and enjoyable part of his life. Gary and JoAnn traveled countless miles to be a part of their grandchildren’s sporting events. His hobbies included camping, fishing, and all sports – by attending and/or watching on television. He also bowled for many years.
Following discharge from the United States Army, Gary worked at Lockwood Graders for 13 years and retired as plant manager of Magic Valley Foods, having been employed there for 28 years.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Jan (Phil) Sheridan of Meridian; his daughter-in-law, Kathy Hieb of Boise; grandchildren, John (Amy) Hieb, Eric (Katie) Hieb, Christina (Brandon) Snyder, Melissa Sheridan, Amanda (Colby) Caperon, Philip Sheridan, and Jessica Sheridan; nine great-grandchildren, Klark, Emry and Raelyn Hieb, Derek, Clara, Hadley and Brielle Caperon, and Theodore and Lewis Snyder; his sister, Ruth C. Jonas of Blackfoot; two half-sisters, Loretta (Blaine) Allphin of Burley, and Doris Hieb of Rupert; two half-brothers, Richard Hieb of Central Point, Oregon, and Melvin Hieb of Rupert; as well as his nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, John and Christina; step-mother, Lydia Hieb; his wife, JoAnn Hieb; his son, Alan Hieb; two brothers; and a step-brother.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 909 8th St., in Rupert, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. James A. Von Busch. Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Group. Burial will follow at Rupert Cemetery.
