Plumarella flabellata ist eine azooxanthellate Hornkoralle, die zu ihrem Leben auf einen kontinuierlichen Fang von fressbaren Mikro-Zooplankton angewiesen ist.
In Wassertiefen von bis zu 290 Metern könnten Zooxanthellen unmöglich ausreichend Licht für die Durchführung der Fotosynthese erhalten, von daher muss die Ernährung über die Aufnahme von Plankton sichergestellt werden.

Plumarella flabellata wächst auf sandigen Böden mit gelegentlichen Geröllflächen, wo die Hornkoralle auch in größeren Stückzahlen angetroffen werden kann.

Aquaristisch spielt diese farblich ansprechende Koralle keine Rolle.
