This parrotfish species is found in coastal bays and deep lagoons, where it inhabits seagrass meadows or dense algae beds. Calotomus spinidens feeds on these algae and also on their epiphytes.

Divers do not often see this species as it is well camouflaged and easy to overlook, camouflage effect. Body color: greenish-brown, but there are also lighter variants with a pink dot and stripe pattern.
