Lutjanus vitta inhabits areas of and adjacent to coral reefs and areas with flat bottoms and occasionally low coral outcrops, sponges and sea whips
This swarm-forming species can be found on coastal reefs, the bases of fringing reefs, near continental shelf reefs and on shoals and hard bottom areas between reefs.
Lutjanus vitta feeds on fish, shrimps, crabs and other benthic invertebrates.
The males grow larger than females and reach a maximum total length of about 40 cm.
