The waters around the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea were and still are a hotspot for new species.
In reef caves, under reef overhangs and over sloping reef slopes, the dwarf perch Pseudochromis lugubris has been described as a "not uncommon species".
Pseudochromis lugubris seems to be closely related to Pseudochromis bitaeniatus from the West Pacific and to Pseudochromis tonozukai from Indonesian Sumatra, although no relationship can be discerned visually.
Pseudochromis bitaeniatus and Pseudochromis tonozukai are commercially available, no information is available on Pseudochromis lugubris at present.
