Info

Cerithium punctatum Bruguière, 1792

Cerithium punctatum is a shell snail from the family Cerithiidae (horn snails). In snails in this family, the shell varies greatly in size and sculpture, making identification extremely difficult. They have a horny operculum to close the housing opening. Horn snails are among the most common shallow-water snails and occur in large colonies in the intertidal zone, especially on sandy areas near coral reefs.

Cerithium punctatum usually has a dot pattern. The spotted needle snail has a large distribution area and occurs particularly in the Indo-West Pacific. These snails are found in large numbers under rocks, in intertidal, lagoon, peak and lake reefs.
