Info

Bryozoans like Eudendrium rameum occur in two forms, the initially free-swimming medusa and later the sessile, epiphytic polyp, which can resemble corals.

Eudendrium rameum often occurs associated with brown algae Sargassum muticum (gulf kelp) and Halidrys sliquosa (Scotch kelp or sea oak) on hard bottoms.

Hydrozoon stage: colonies can grow to a height of 25 cm, they are strongly branched.
The main stem is brown and much thicker than the branches. Branch diameter decreases uniformly with distance from the trunk. The hydranths are pink colored and have 20-24 tentacles. It can be confused with E. ramosum.

These highly branched, bushy colonies of the shrubby tree polyp can reach 20 cm in diameter.
The very fine branchlets are brown to greenish, often polluted by muddy sediments, and the polyps are white and more or less translucent.

The branches of Eudendrium ramosum slope more upward, giving the colony a more slender and upright profile.

Feeders:
Fjordia browni (Picton, 1980), Proceraea cornuta (Agassiz, 1862).

Synonyms:
Eudendrium planum Bonnevie, 1898
Eudendrium stratum Bonnevie, 1898
