Info

Very specal thanks for the first two photos of Margarites groenlandicus to Alexander Semerov, Russia.

The cold-water gastropod Margarites groenlandicus, despite its rather small size, has an important role in the marine food chain, serving as an important and energy-rich snack for fish such as the haddock, seabirds such as the eider ducks and beachcombers, and the bearded seal Erignathus barbatus.

Depending on the region, the snails vary in size, 0.6cm in the UK and up to 2.5cm in the Barents Sea.

The shell may be cream, orange or pink, showing no external iridescence but a blue-green refraction in the opening.
The shell has a spirally ribbed, depressed, spherical shape with seven epipodial tentacles with black sensory papillae on each side of the body.
