Info
The stony coral Javania cailleti, belonging to the family Flabellidae, resembles at first sight rather a typical anemone.
The body column in anemones is flexible and consists of living cells, while Javania cailleti forms a hard, calcareous and cup-shaped skeleton.
However, Javania cailleti is a solitary coral that occurs to great depths, which can only be observed using an ROV.
The first photo is from the Anegada Passage, a Caribbean strait between the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla, the second photo is from Davidson Seamount from 2673 meters depth.
Synonyms:
Desmophyllum cailleti Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864
Desmophyllum delicatum Yabe & Eguchi, 1942
Desmophyllum eburneum Moseley, 1880
Desmophyllum galapagense Vaughan, 1906
Desmophyllum nobile Verrill, 1885
Desmophyllum vitreum Alcock, 1898
Galaxea eburnea Pourtalès, 1871
