Javania lamprotichum is a solitary stony coral that can be found at different depths, below the epipelagial to the mesopelagial.
Below the epipelagial, photosynthesis is no longer possible, as sufficient sunlight cannot penetrate these zones.
Since Javania lamprotichum is a solitary stony coral, it cannot perform reef-building functions and belongs to the ahermatypical stony corals.
Besides the water pressure existing at these depths, Javania lamprotichum also copes with quite low water temperatures.
