Info

Caesia fossata (Gould, 1850)

Caesia fossata, the channeled basket snail, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Nassariidae, the Nassa mud snails or dog whelks. It is native to the west coast of North America where it is found on mudflats on the foreshore and on sand and mud in shallow water.

This is one of the largest mud snails in the genus and has a robust shell that can reach nearly 5 cm long.

Caesia fossata is a scavenger. This nassa lays its characteristic egg-masses on any available solid objects.
