Info
Halichondria (Eumastia) sitiens has a short stalk that typically branches into several tubes stuck together.
The consistency of the sponge is inelastic and stiff due to a combination of a high spicule density and lack of spongin, but despite this, the sponge tissue is easily torn.
Halichondria (Eumastia) sitiens is a cushion-shaped sponge, but its oscula are not obvious.
The surface is smooth, the papillae hollow and conical, but blunt or more pointed at the apex if they bear a terminal capsule.
The height of the sponge is at least 15cm.
Color: Live sponges of this species are light brown, golden brown or creamy white, pale yellow.
Habitat:
In Alaska, sponges are found attached to boulders and boulders, and in the Bering Sea, attached to boulders and boulders.
Higher water temperatures led to a mass die-off of the species in the White Sea in 2018!
Species name: sitiens (Latin) = thirsty, referring to the numerous papillae of the sponge.
