Info

Hetereleotris psammophila Kovačić & Bogorodsky, 2014

The goby Hetereleotris psammophila was described in 2014 based on two collected specimens.

Hetereleotris psammophila differs from other species of the genus Hetereleotris by the absence of scales and head pores. It differs from the similar species Hetereleotris diademata by having fewer rays in the second dorsal and anal fins and coloration.

Hetereleotris psammophila meter prefers open sandy areas near coral reefs at depths of 8 - 21 meters as habitat.

A very unusual way of life for species of the genus Hetereleotris is the fact that the goby has a nocturnal lifestyle.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
