Microcanthus strigatus also commonly referred as the Stripey can be recognised by its deep, compressed body, and distinct pattern of slanting black and yellow to white stripes. Stripy is often confused with its relative the Mado Atypichthys strigatus but they are slimmer looking fish with brown stripes on a white background.
Stripey is distributed in Japan, China and Hawaiiian waters, sporadically distributed in western and eastern Australian waters. It lives on rocky and coral reefs in protected coastal and estuarine waters. It is seen in small to large schools. Juveniles often occurring in rock pools.
Remarks:
Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
