Luidia is a genus of starfish in the family Luidiidae (Sladen, 1889) in which it is the only genus.
The Southern Sand Star Luidia australiae is cream to light brown or grey in colour, blotched with dark brown, dark green or black.
Feed on small molluscs, brittle stars, and sea urchins, ecspecially heart urchins such as Echinocardium cordatum.
Can be found on sand or muddy bottom where it buries itself.
