Unfortunately, not much is known about the soft coral Sclerophytum hirtum, the majority of reports concern the localities where the coral is found.
Data about the water depth are very sparse, described color data of living colonies are completely missing, only on the basis of insitu pictures green and light brown tones can be concluded.

Colonies of this species are small and have thin, branching small lobules that are very dense and in turn coalesce into larger aggregations.

A documented habitat is a reef slope from the Gulf of Mannar, a bay of the between India and Sri Lanka.
