The upper side of the Barred Needle Fish Ablennes hians is dark bluish, underneath it is silvery-white.
Up to 12 black bars or vertically elongated spots can be seen on the sides of the pike's body.

Found in most tropical and temperate marine waters, this Barred Needle Fish has long, thin jaws with relatively large, pointed teeth.

Adults are usually found in oceanic waters, juveniles are sometimes found in bays and inlets.
