Info

Sexual dimorphism is distinct in this cuttlefish:
The mantle is relatively broader in females and the arms are much longer in males, especially the ventral pair.

Sepia bertheloti can reach a size of 17.5 cm for males and 13.0 cm for females.7

To date, no reliable information was available on the age of the animals.
Recent studies showed a maximum life expectancy of 433 days for animals from Guinea-Bissau and 419 days for animals from Morocco .

Sepia bertheloti is landed as bycatch in trawl fisheries after the main squid species Sepia officinalis and Sepia hierreda.

Sepia bertheloti is of interest to scientists as a bioindicator of potential pollution of the marine environment by toxic elements.
For this purpose, the concentration of CI, Sr, K, Ca, Br, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni and Se were studied.
The results show that at a daily consumption level of 100 g/day, the levels of the elements in the seafood are close to the US recommended dietary reference values for people of different age groups.

The analyses also allowed a pollution index to be calculated, indicating that the squid may have ingested the elements in polluted marine environments.

Not an animal to keep in an aquarium!
