Info

Paguristes erythrops Holthuis, 1959

Paguristes erythrops is a hermit crab in the family Diogenidae, the left-handed hermit crabs. Their left scissors are usually larger than the right ones.

In Paguristes erythrops there is a sexual size dimorphism in the length and width of the left scissors. The size information in the article refers to the tank length. The hermit can be found from the tides down to a depth of approx. 190m and prefers hard bottoms consisting of rocks and rubble, but has also been found in sandy and muddy bottoms.

For example, the hermit used the empty shell of the Murex snail Favartia cellulosa as a home, which was completely covered with live hard corals Astrangia rathbuni.
