Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Goniopora columna are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Goniopora columna, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Goniopora columna, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

Goniopora columna
Dana, 1846

General:
Margerite corals, such as Alveopora and Goniopora, have enjoyed great popularity in aquarium care for many years.
The main difference between the two species:
Alveopora polyps have 12 tentacles, while Goniopora polyps have 24 tentacles.

Some of them keep well and can then often be propagated well.

Certainly not all species can be lumped together, some are still considered difficult.
Still, with the many additives we have today, and the appropriate feeding, it is easier than it used to be.

We know that many get part of their nutrition from the light, but the species that are really fit and characterized by growth are those that can also filter out usable material from the water.

We have made the experience that the species to which dust food (planktonic) is added, grow better and also stand better.

Gonioporas and Alveoporas should get a moving but never direct current.
They will not grow up otherwise.

They require medium light levels, so they can be established between the center and near the bottom.

They are not quite as sensitive to water quality, but still they should be offered low No3 and Po4 concentrations in the water as well.

Experience shows that they do better with trace element additions and more frequent salt changes.
This also indicates that they can absorb many other things from the water besides food.

The identification of the species is not very easy despite good reference books.
To be able to do it 100%, we would have to have a skeleton.
Therefore we also have to classify species as sp. again and again.
The following species are known:

Goniopora albiconus
Goniopora burgosi
Goniopora cellulosa
Goniopora ciliatus
Goniopora columna
Goniopora djiboutiensis
Goniopora eclipsensis
Goniopora fruticosa
Goniopora lobata
Goniopora minor
Goniopora norfolkensis
Goniopora palmensis
Goniopora pandoraensis
Goniopora pearsoni
Goniopora pendulus
Goniopora planulata
Goniopora polyformis
Goniopora savignyi
Goniopora somaliensis
Goniopora stokesi
Goniopora sultani
Goniopora tenella
Goniopora tenuidens

Da wir bisher keine ID der beiden roten Goniopora Arten von Chris Spreyer haben, (waren bisher als Goniopora sp. eingestuft) hat sich Andreas an Charly Veron gewandt. Seine Antwort zu der Art.

"G. columna if the tentacles can be well extended, but a colour form I have not seen."
