Spheciospongia purpurea (Lamarck, 1815)
Spheciospongia purpurea is a boring sponge. Drilling sponges drill into limestone, coral, mussel and snail shells with the help of corrosive substances, depending on the species.
These sponges live in drilled chambers that communicate with each other. Drilled sponges are thus involved in the degradation of coral reefs.
The sponge is host to the barnacle Membranobalanus porphyrophilus.
This boring sponge colonizes reef slopes where it encrusts live and dead corals.
Synonyms:
Alcyonium purpureum Lamarck, 1815
Spirastrella bonneti Topsent, 1906
Spirastrella purpurea (Lamarck, 1815)
