Info

Cheilopogon melanurus, also called the Atlantic Flying Fish is one of the needle fishes which can use their wing-fins to leave the water and glide over the water surface for short distances. They can glide 30-50 feet wide at a height of 1.5 meters.

Cheilopogon melanurus is found in the Gulf of Mexico, north to North Carolina/USA, and further south to the coasts of Brazil usually near the surface and near coasts, but also in the open ocean. Further they are to found allong the coasts of Canada. Along the coast of Africa are known occurrence off the coast of Senegal to Liberia.

Unfortunately, little is known about the biology of the fish. The body of the flying fish is similar to the Clupeiformes. It is covered by large, slightly sloping shed. The nostril is situated close to the eyes and is great. It is reported that they attach their eggs to floating debris (wood, Sargassum seaweed, etc.).
