Distribution
Indo-Pacific: anti-tropical in distribution. Reported from Seychelles but Randall and van Egmond 1994 believe otherwise.
Eastern Pacific: Costa Rica and Easter Island and Chile.

Short description
Vertebrae: 120 - 123. Dark purplish brown with small yellow spots which is sparse on the tail. This species is similar to Gymnothorax meleagris in having biserial maxillary teeth, with inner and outer series about equal in length; intermaxillary teeth arranged in a peripheral series, a median series, and an intermediate series on each side between the median and peripheral series.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
