Info

Linnaeus, 1758

Distribution
Southeast Atlantic: Atlantic coast from Morocco to the English Channel. Also known from the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

Biology
Found over hard bottoms. Mainly nocturnal, it feeds on small invertebrates. Oviparous.
Spawn in April (Marseille) or July (England); eggs are laid under mussel-shells or stones and guarded by the male

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
