Chaetodon aureofasciatus, also known as the Golden butterflyfish and the Golden-striped butterflyfish; To be found in the Indo-West Pacific from New Guinea, Australia from the Great Barrier Reef to Western Australia and Melanesia. Inhabit singly or in pairs in inshore reefs and coastal areas. Like Chaetodon rainfordi, the closest relative with which it bears many similarities; there are no bars on the body and the median and pelvic fins are bright yellow. Chaetodon aureofasciatus shows a black-edged orange bar through the eye, although this is not joined at the nape. The maximum adult size is around 12,5 cm (5 in.)
This fish is not suitable for a reef tank because its natural diet comprises coral polyps as well as algae and other benthic invertebrates. It is very difficult to get to feed. Live blood worms (Enchytrae) seems to be the best in the first time. After that, it’s only a matter of time before they accept other foods. Juveniles between 1 - 5 cm don't make much problems to feed, adult ones as already described.
Remarks:
Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopteri (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Percoidei (Suborder) > Chaetodontidae (Family) > Chaetodon (Genus) > Chaetodon aureofasciatus (Species)
