Info
Lucernaria quadricornis is a cup jellyfish. These are cnidarians that bear characteristics of a jellyfish and a polyp at the same time. They live solitary and semi-sessile.
At the edge of the umbrella there are 8 groups of 100 - 140 tentacles each, arranged like a pompon. Like polyps they live in a fixed place, but they can also move around. Some species live pelagic. Unlike normal polyps, they reproduce by sexual reproduction.
Sometimes the polyp has pigment eyes, this is unique to the cnidarians. In the Cubozoa (cube jellyfish), some jellyfish have eyes, but never the polyp.
The stalked jellyfish are distributed worldwide. However, they are not distinctly common anywhere. 80% of the species are restricted to the Northern Hemisphere.
Most species of cup and stipe jellyfish live mostly in temperate to cold waters of rocky coasts, from intertidal to shallow subtidal.Very little is known about their lifestyle but they feed on small crustaceans similar to sea anemones.
