(Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864)

The Caribbean sponge is dark red, brown, purple or violet with blue reflections, it forms long tubes, its surface feels prickly, thorny, its mucus layer falls off easily when touched and discolors fingers and hands.

However, the sponge can also grow encrusted and fill small cavities in rocks, the sponge contains few sclerites, its consistency is hard but compressible.
