Coris pictoides inhabits sand and rubble areas adjacent to coral reefs in depths of 10 to at least 30 meters.
It has been recorded in shallow estuaries or lagoons, but appears more common in depths below 20 meters.
Coris pictoides reaches a maximum size of about 12 cm. Juvenilles are associated with sand living anemones (e.g. Stichodactyla haddoni).

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
