      Critics Consensus

Though it uses a well-worn formula, 17 Again has just enough Zac Efron charm to result in a harmless, pleasurable teen comedy.

Audience Member Starring the late Mathew Perry, Leslie Mann, Zac Efron, and Michelle Trachtenberg The movie has been done to death many times in terms of its storytelling Another entry in a long line of age reversal stories But the performance of Zac Efron more than makes up for its lack of originality Perry does fine playing his adult self so when he falls into a magical water and turned back into a teenager he has a second chance to make his life right and set things straight with his kids The whole magical janitor really could've been taken out and the movie would've been better It's true when you're young everything feels like the end of the world but it's actually not A straightforward if forgettable viewing but good performances all around Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Sean G Sweet story about being a good father and husband. Tons of plotholes but hey it's a teen comedy. I appreciated a lot of the body swap humor, but the "Back to the Future" father-daughter relationship always weirds me out. Overall, very cute though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Manuel L Don't let the 55 rotten tomatoes score scare you away. This is gonna be a lot better then some of the films your considering. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Ryan G This movie has a lot of great comedy. Really takes you back to what being a teen in high school was like in the early-mid 00s. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review R W Apart from the weird not recognising their own dad, . It's a class film , with a cool message and ferris buler no nonsense feel to it . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/30/23 Full Review Ann T This was the worst movie I have ever had to endure in my whole existence on this planet for 32 friggin' years. The worst. I never knew this movie existed, and I wish I still had those more carefree days ahead of me instead of what the last 30 minutes of my life showed me with this movie. Do not watch this movie unless you are doing it ironically to understand the deep anger I harbor for this. I guess spoilers ahead…but I'm saving you the misery so you're welcome you dummy contemplating whether you should watch this movie based on "popular opinion" reviews. I bet you like Yelp for restaurant ratings too. And live in the blandest U.S. suburb of _____. It starts out with the dumbest shirtless basketball tossing sequence by a baby-Bieber-haircut-donning Zac Efron. Jim Gaffigan looks like a pedo basketball coach. Then Zac Efron (5'8") Freaky-Fridays into a post-growth spurt Matthew Perry (6') who looks haggard AF. He's a loser at work and is a total douche baggie husband to Leslie Mann. So much misogyny and putting his wife down to make her feel bad that he was "the good guy" who married her after knocking her up in high school even though she carried the fucking baby and he *sniff* had to give up his high school basketball game and the chance to go to college so he could get a job as a pill pusher sleaze ball sales guy at pharmaceutical company. This movie keeps going for an eternity with the worst dialogue and acting the human race has ever seen. Turns out a bunch of the actors chose to be directed or took a "creative choice" to look like a child predator or screen. Leslie Mann gropes and slow dances with high schooler Zac Efron. As supposedly freaky- fridayed dad in Zac Efron "high schooler" body, he gives a creepy soliloquy to his high school daughter (plus all of the health class) about the importance of a woman's abstinence from sex and the virtues of virginity…like a total creep…even though he literally got his high school gf pregnant all those years ago to have a 17 year old daughter now… Oh and later he fucking glorifies beating adulterous women according to fundamentalist Islam to tell Leslie Mann's character who is going on her first date after filing for divorce. Matthew Perry and Zac Efron think they own her still as a "married woman" despite the fact that she's been absolutely miserable the majority of her life stuck with these two absolute assholes who talk only about their HS bball player dreams being crushed while she also missed out on more of her life because of one night of protected sex with a piece of shit bf in high school who locked her into a shit spiral of a life until her first foray into the dating world as an actual adult woman. Anyway the point is please just don't watch this movie. It's the absolute worst. Also women's right to choose what to do for their own health and body is an important right not a privilege based on your connection to a man with power or money or religious hypocrisy. This film would have been way better if it could have ended with young Zac Efron gf being able to decide her own life trajectory instead of wasting the next 17 years of her life in perpetual torture by fragile masculinity. You're Kenough. She could have been Barbie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Caryn James Marie Claire Endearingly funny. Dec 14, 2017 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Rated: 3/5 Apr 23, 2009 Full Review Nell Minow Beliefnet It relies primarily on charm and unabashed sweetness that perfectly suits Efron's easy grace. Rated: B+ Apr 22, 2009 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast A surprisingly enjoyable body swap comedy. Efron is winsome in his first non-HSM vehicle and while the incest storyline is cringey, he and Mann have great chemistry. Far too much Lennon, however. Rated: 3/5 Jan 9, 2024 Full Review Germain Lussier io9.com The relatability and vulnerability that Perry brings to Mike are what truly elevates 17 Again. Nov 3, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Here’s the shocker: the movie is pretty good, no matter how many times you’ve seen the whole body-switch phenomenon, and no matter how silly the MacGuffin.
