Jack B A long and engaging story. And a fine example of why Bette Davis was such an acclaimed actress. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully set, albeit overly long, melodrama with Bette Davis playing the innocent and unworldly governess, suffering the wrath of the lady of the house as the rest of the family becomes more attached to her. Davis was good here but I would have probably preferred her playing the role of Barbara O'Neill as it more resembles the type of character I most enjoy seeing Bette take on. The story was fairly straight forward and could have been sufficiently told in 100 minutes as opposed to the over 140 that this film ran, however the last 30 minutes or so were probably the most engaging for me. *Binging Bette Davis #9 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review david l It's a lesser-known fact that Bette Davis was actually just as capable at playing good-hearted, innocent heroines as her more famous bitchy personas. Case in point, All This, and Heaven Too. She's terrific throughout this entire melodrama while Charles Boyer himself was perfectly cast. Barbara O'Neil was a bit too over-the-top, and the movie's way too long for such a simple story, but it remains a strong example of a juicy, emotional 40s melodrama with particularly excellent cinematography. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review steve d Davis is good but the story slides into melodrama. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A very well told story, that keeps you intrigued and guessing with a complicated plot with twists and turns. The gloomy mansion is perfect setting for the story, as is the black & white. Easy to sympathesize with the female lead and love the obedient lil French children. Hard to not see the main male led character as not a villain after Gaslight. For awhile at least in the beginning I kept wondering if he was making the wife out to be evil when he was making her be crazy with affairs or whatever. However, you realize by the end he is much a hero in some ways in the story, which is a very odd thing to say of a murderer who also commits suicide by the end. You feel for him when he goes back to places that remind him of his past life happiness and how he clings to few moments away from his witch of a wife with his kids/governess, while never being an adulteress. A truly sad story, that you wish for a different ending. This is why we have divorce nowadays, bc some ppl are truly evil/mentally unstable and if u happen to marry them get out fast! The crazy part of all is that this is based on a true story! Fact is truly stranger than fiction! And some of it is still very relatable-instead of newspapers we have tabloids and blogs. Instead of mobs in the street, you have social media justice seeking mobs. The title of the movie was kinda stupid and unrelated, but that's about one of my only complaints, that and the main character's unflattering outfits/hair.
