High-Rise may not quite live up to its classic source material, but it still offers an energetic, well-acted, and thought-provoking take on its timely socioeconomic themes.

Jesse D High-Rise is an intriguing movie, not based on the normal plot or character constructs of a regular film. I, unlike many who watched the movie, am not going to give this a five-star rating simply because of Hiddleston's presence in the cast. Hiddleston's performance, however, was simple and honest. I feel the character he portrayed was somewhat set aside and does not exactly fit the main role criteria the film seems to want him to. His character is also somewhat unlikable, which seems to be a theme for most of the characters in this movie. Other reviews have stated that they felt that the violence in the film was made to not look as exciting as it should have been, but I feel that was the point. In the system created, that violence was not unusual and the film does a great job of shaking off the fact that characters either died, got injured, or hurt someone else. The film may not be for everyone, with it's violence, gore, and disturbing message about a community meant to work together but falling apart, but in the end, I find this movie an interesting social experiment with a wonderfully talented cast and crew. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review matthias s "High Rise" is a rollercoaster of a film that takes you on a dizzying journey through the twisted corridors of social hierarchy. With Tom Hiddleston leading the charge, the movie boasts a massive talented cast that delivers captivating performances. As a fan of movies exploring societal structures, I found myself enthralled by the film's exploration of primal instincts and power dynamics. While the graphic scenes may not be for the faint of heart, they are necessary for the raw authenticity of the story. The pacing does stumble at times, but the gripping narrative keeps you hooked despite the occasional lull. One standout aspect is the use of ABBA's "SOS" in various forms throughout the film, adding an unexpected but fitting layer to the experience. The director's attention to detail shines through in the incredible camerawork and sound design. While some may find it polarizing, "High Rise" is undeniably a thought-provoking and visually stunning ride that warrants praise for its boldness and ambition. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Georgan G 3 & 1/4 stars. The plot was interesting but it was hard to like any of the characters. Dystopian sci fi is usually worth watching & although this film could have been better, it was ok. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Mahdiyeh H I didn't like how the source material was treated in this adaptation at all, though I am very curious about how Ruben Östlund would have dramatized this story. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Peter G Some of the actors attempt to transcend the script & try to make their characters more interesting but the plot (virtually non existent) & the entire premise proves to be pretty much of a non-starter once the promising idea degenerates into a incoherent comment on a modern (it all takes place 1975, but never mind) concept of alternative residential living. Visually, despite some overly frenetic cutting in the more elaborate out of control crowd scenes, the film has some striking images, in particular the high rise itself. The social commentary, concerning the privileged upper floor residents at odds with those less affluent living below is pretty lame & unimaginative, IMO, & had I not been watching the proceedings on a DVD at home, I might have, as some did, apparently, left the theater, after the first hour. Actually, as it turned out, things did not improve in any way thereafter. Both Hiddleston & Irons keep the film somewhat watchable but only barely. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review Alec B The movie should work better than it does (despite chaotic energy, the pacing lags quite often) but I admire Wheatley's commitment to his bizarre vision. Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses High-Rise may not be the greatest Ballard adaptation ever made, but it doesn't have to be: it stands on its own as a masterclass of the substance of style, and how stories told long ago can have often eerie, direct parallels in the future. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online High-Rise is just about the looniest garbage I have seen in a long while. Rated: F Mar 21, 2017 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times In High-Rise the fitfully brilliant Briton Ben Wheatley, with writing partner Amy Jump, seizes what seems a perfect-fitting text -- JG Ballard's dystopian novel High-Rise -- and makes an omnishambles of it.
