      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

If a bit too slight, Shrill continues Annie's journey of self discovery with compassion while also shining a welcome spotlight on some of the show's strong side characters.

Audience Member After the surprisingly (to me) funny season one, this second season feels like a huge letdown. To me its seems there was some kind of meeting between the season where it was decided that the show had to be A.) Less funny and B.) Absolutely overflowing with inclusivity. Sadly the intended diversification of the characters lead to the one thing you don't want in a current TV show: stereotyping. Most characters are unlikable, and way over the top, to the point where I cringed when the umpteenth stereotype was enforced. Aidan, please return to what you did in season 1 instead of ticking off boxes. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member the third star is for the fireworks display at the end. loved that. overall, i finished this season not wanting a third. the characters become clunky stuck in their stereotypical personalities. the aubrey plaza like character in the office who says the worst things but it sucks more than it is funny. the generic sounding now one of two black guys in the office. the "cool" black guy. the idiot boyfriend who i never understood why Annie was so set on making him a thing. or at least a serious ting. let the man eat your pushy (if you must) but don't take him home to meet your parents, Because of this there was no real investment on my end in their relationship. breaking up seemed natural and understandable though I actually did not like the way she did it. at all. the man is clearly a dumb child and she broke his heart with fire. also some of the dialogue and interactions...it just reminded me that this was supposed to be a fun, fast show not a show that accurately portrays complex mother-daughter relationships and the search to fulfill oneself. cool ride of a show overall though. had a few more laughs. but i'm done now. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member My wife and I loved this series. Looking forward to Season 3! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member S2 keeps being excellent and delightful as S1 (if not more). Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member not as good as the first season definitely felt like a set up to a blazing third season though Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The show is funny, Aidy Bryant is always charismatic. But I can not help being startled by the moral stand the show takes. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Gina Escandon Bitch Media Offers real storytelling to chew on. Mar 15, 2021 Full Review Ashlie D. Stevens Salon.com This season of Shrill, much like the last, manages to find itself in a very sweet spot between true-to-life and heartwarming. It's sugared, but not saccharine. Jan 24, 2020 Full Review Alan Sepinwall Rolling Stone Shrill is back to being a sweet, pleasant show that's still taking its time getting wherever it wants to go... There's not a lot to the new season beyond the appeal of the performers. Rated: 3/5 Jan 22, 2020 Full Review Chelsea Steiner The Mary Sue The second season of Shrill is here, and it's badder and more brilliant than ever. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Stephanie Chapman Pop Culture Leftovers Where season 1 was filled with sympathy, awkwardness, laughs and moments of pure joy and acceptance, season 2 finds a nice jogging pace into mediocrity. Feb 6, 2020 Full Review Alison Foreman Mashable In Season 2, the series hits its sophomore slump hard - trading that bold feminist stance for eight episodes of very cute, very bland whatever.
