Olivia Cooke's brilliant portrayal of the feisty and scheming Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair makes this adaptation of Thackeray's classic novel more relatable for a 21st century audience.

Spencer P A regency book adaptation for those looking for slightly edgier Jane Austen parallels, Vanity Fair has satisfying drama, humor, and a surprisingly thrilling war episode, but the main character's ultimate development left me without admiring her as much as I thought I would at the beginning. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Roy V Olivia Cooke cooks with Fierce tenacity in this rendition of a classic. I loved to hate and desire her at the same time. She is so well suited for these roles! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/19/23 Full Review Audience Member The best adaptation of this story. I binged watched the box set over two nights and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review tom m Well done. I enjoyed it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review sean w Would have been a 5 except for I HATE the beginning part where the guys says "striving for things not worth having" in every episode. So unneeded and that entire opening sequence after that, like what were they thinking!? Overall tho the show is great if you like Victorian dramas (I love them) it's only tiny bit "woke" but it's within the tolerable level (unlike most shows today) overall highly recommended! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent acting, anchored by Olivia Cooke, who steals every scene--even though her character is essentially unlovable. Struggling to find her place in a class-conscious world that values a fortunate birth over talent and ingenuity, Becky would be recognized today as a charming psychopath. She's manipulative, has no real emotional attachments, and only values people for what they can do for her. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic In Cooke, this Vanity Fair has an actor who revels in Becky's scheming and her ambition. Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Troy Patterson New Yorker Softening Becky's edges and defanging the story's satire, Amazon offers a self-contradictory miniseries without much of a point. Dec 21, 2018 Full Review Kristen Baldwin Entertainment Weekly Cooke does an admirable job making the cold-hearted, quick-witted Becky entertainingly unlikable; if only the production didn't require her to break the fourth wall with periodic smirks to the camera. Rated: C+ Dec 21, 2018 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site The series sincerely attempts, all in all, to do justice to Thackeray's complexities and ambiguities. Feb 10, 2021 Full Review Megan Basham WORLD Though still a "very vain, wicked, foolish place, full of all sorts of humbugs and falsenesses and pretensions," Amazon's Vanity Fair is nonetheless a deliciously entertaining and edifying place. Feb 14, 2019 Full Review Ani Bundel WETA For those who have never read or seen Vanity Fair, this is a perfectly good by-the-numbers adaptation. Jan 24, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
