Kay Seaton (Jean Seberg) and her psychiatrist husband Neil Stanton (Arthur Hill) live on the French Rivera. Kay has an affair with an Mark (Sean Garrison), an American Naval officer who she accidentally shoots while trying to end their relationship. She abandons the body and anonymously reports it to the police. Later Neil takes on an amnesiac patient recovering from a gun shot wound.
