In a Civilized Manner

A self-proclaimed seeker of peace and his trusty "system" venture on a journey to flip the world on its back—in a civilized manner, of course.
Edris has always aimed for a peaceful, carefree life, but the world around him? Not so much. It started with encountering the amnesic, system-like entity in his head. From there, only absurdities followed. Aristocratic conspiracies, mismatched identities, intercontinental wars... Hold on—did he just get called a prophet? In any case, as the world descends into chaos, Edris's carefree life may be just a bit further away than expected.
UPDATES TUES-THUR-SAT
NOTE: This is a progression fantasy with LITRPG/GameLit elements that start in Part 2 (Ch 58). You should come in expecting a not-so-righteous MC, both laidback and high stake adventures, and multiperspective narratives.

I love it! It has a unpredictable storyline, and the main character is not your run of the mill protagonist. However, it is not a get OP quick thing. It has a very intresting way to try to brake the rules. And, I also think it's a funny series, personally. The main character has to use his wits often, and frankly, they have horrible luck.
Though there are some small spelling errors, they usuallyget fixed pretty quickly. I really like this story, and thats all I have to say. Thank you for this story, OatBread person.
I have to say right out of the gate, I REALLY like our POV character here, Edris. He is a pretty complex archetype of a person who, while not technically a bad person, is highly invested in benefiting himself.
He has an air of manipulation and being a tad ruthless, but he isn't malicious, his actions are in his own self interest.
He's a bit of a bastard, I'll say that. But that doesn't make him unenjoyable to read from. It's very clear that he has a strong read on people and actively takes advantage of that, but he doesn't go out of his way to make other people worse off just for that.
The plot behind him as well is also very good. He is a traveller from out of town and he has a mystique to him about his origins, only to have a disembodied voice with special magical powers dawn on him and give him all the benefits with very little of the downsides.
Besides that, the formatting, grammer, and general construction of the story is top notch. I didn't find a single flaw worth mentioning. Overall this is a story I'll probably come back to once I get some more time to read it.
Update at CH58: just finished the entire part 1 (basically until the newest chap) and what i said below still stands. The story is really solid, especially for binging, and the worldbuilding is huge here. I feel the story progresses on an upward slope, and once you get past the first few chapters a momentum builds up. Even after over 50 chapters it is still getting better, especially with the author finally introducing stats and gamelit elements into the game (the specifics i will not spoil, but things are getting really exciting). Can't wait for what's next!
Update at CH14: Read until the newest chapter and I must say it's been a pleasant surprise!
The story is still in its early stages, but the plot moves fast, and so far every chapter serves a purpose. The author says that they've been planning this for awhile now, so I'm looking forward to how everything unfolds. Despite being high fantasy, worldbuilding and plot are well integrated together. So far, the plot hints at some other species as well, so I'm hoping to meet some of them soon.
No noticeable grammar mistakes. The writing flows well and is easy to keep entertained.
The author also does a solid job with character design. The protagonists are full of mysteries, especially Ace, but these unknowns add to the fun of the story. A mischievous traveller and his sharp-tongued "system." I'm really digging Edris's personality. A calculating, pragmatic traveller who knows exactly what he wants (a cottage by the coastlines, strangely realistic goal despite it being a fantasy world). There's a lot hilarious misunderstandings on the MC's goals from the other characters, but in actuality the man just wants to make some money to buy a house (hits too close). And Ace, every time he roasts Edris I just find myself smiling. Totally deserving though (sorry Edris).
I feel like this book is going to be something big. If you're looking for some charismatic characters and fast pacing, give this a chance!
Story: The story follows a man named Edris and his system companion as they go through the city of Nolmes on a quest to make money to fund Edris’ retirement home. The world clearly has a lot of thought put into it, with the various items, places, and cultures have their own distinct details. The story pacing is pretty fast, too fast for my own tastes, but for those who like to cut straight to the action, this is a pretty good read.
Style: The style is straight to the point, never wasting a single word. It’s a bit simple for my personal tastes, but it still flows well and makes for a comfortable read.
Great use of foreshadowing.
Character: Character personalities are great! Especially Edris. His sly, calculating personality can be seen clearly through every page. He’s clever, resourceful, and his perspective is a delight to read. His odd character quirks make him stand out from the bland, self righteous main characters in other stories, making it a great chance of pace.
Grammar: A few mistakes, but nothing that breaks up the flow of the story.
Overall: A really solid work, and a great start! I wish you all the best with writing this story.
This is the story of a gentle, peace loving young man who I suspect may be a sociopath. And if that doesn't get your foot in the door, I don't know what will. Said pacifist sociopath discovers early on that he has a system-type entity in his head, which is an unexpected boon given his self given quest to secure lots of money and a nice house!
Style - The style is quite clean. Sometimes it's more verbose than it needs to be, and several times I found the author circling around the same information points without moving on, but on the whole it does a very good job of telling the story without getting in the way.
Grammar - No issues observed!
Story - This is where the review title comes into it. From the get go, it is clear just how much world building has gone into this. The world is fully realised, and though the MC may be planning on coasting through the world on his quest for a peaceful, affluent life, I can tell his own charm and scheming is going to throw him front and centre on the world stage. And I can't wait! The pacing is fast, which personally I love, so there won't be a long wait before the stakes start ratcheting up!
Character - Character is excellent! Edris in particular is a great MC that really breaks away from the all too common paragon of virtue hero. He is self serving and scheming, but already accidentally magnetic to those around him (if only they knew his kindness came from a place of apathy or disinterest). The system entity is the perfect foil for Edris, and their interactions add a fantastic layer of character and humour to the story.
All in all, strongly recommend you check this out!
I'm really liking it so far. The story follows traveller Edris and his system-like entity in his head as they create trouble throughout the kingdom. I see other reviews mentioning this too, but the MC is not your typical idealist dude who wants to make the world a better place. Most (maybe even all) of his actions so far are based on self-incentives, so I'm curious as to how his character will grow from here. Not only the MC, but other characters introduced also have their own quirks and motifs, and the interactions between them adds a layer of humour to the story.
Overall, good potential and I'm gonna read on to see how it goes and update this review if necessary.
I like the story, the main characters and their dynamic; it's an enjoyable read.
However, there are some small things that could use a little look over, especially earlier on. For example, in a recent chapter the mana detector is used and gives him a rating of 0.001. Rather than just saying "The detector cannot fully see my mana channels (because some reason/I am special)", just say that his ability to use Tempest must be messing with the reading.
As for earlier stuff, several interactions feel like there's leaps of logic too large for my Suspension of Disbelief, and if there was just one more line of dialogue, either to flesh out what Edris is saying or to further explain the train of thought of the person he's talking to, it would be actually believable. I think the person I had the biggest issue about this with was Celio in the tournament fight.
One last thing is further explanation as to why people think he's a prophet. I didn't really get why people suddenly thought he could see the future because he teleported in front of the blow meant for the King - I understand that it's an impressive feat, but not how the two are related. Maybe add something about that ancient king guy who established the kingdom using such a form of teleportation frequently? Although that would still just have Edris as the king reborn, I don't really understand how it makes him a prophet too. Maybe have something where he mentions he believes something bad is going to happen with the queen earlier in the party, so Donal believes Edris can see the future, and shares this with his father? Don't know how that would leak to the common people though.
Anyways, still enjoying and liking the story overall. Would just like some vague wording cleared up or explained more.
Story 5/5: In a Civilized Manner is a high-fantasy story with a system entity who resides in the MCs head. The premise is fresh to me because the MC immediately thinks of ways he can benefit from the arrangement but does not go full Dr. Evil, at least thus far.
Style 4.5/5: the style of the story is well-written. Despite the task of juggling multiple PoVs and a voice in the MC’s head, I never really felt confused by the narration or tone.
Grammar 5/5: I felt the grammar was on point and stopped bothering to look for mistakes after the fifth chapter or so.
Character 5/5: In a Civilized Manner has a great cast of characters. Edris is a compelling character who immediately looks to profit from his luck. With a lot of system / LitRPG / Iseikai books, the MC is quick to come to terms with what is happening to them, and it is not much different in ICM because the magical setting of the world makes me feel as a reader it is more likely that Edris would come to terms with it all quicker.
Overall 5/5: In a Civilized Manner is a fun romp that ticks many boxes. I enjoyed my time with it and think it is well worth the time to read.
A traveller casually causing havoc around the world and getting himself into all types of situations. The protagonist Edris is a breath fo fresh air. I like him a lot. The side characters are also very unique in their own ways and the intrigue itself is set up nicely for a larger adventure. Really appreciated the author's daily updates until now, too bad it's 3 times a week now, but I'm still looking forward to the future chapters.
Very nice read and I'd recommend you all to give it a try.
Style:
I do not grade style, but know it is in third person PoV. And the way it is used does well to paint what is happening.
Grammar:
Seems to be fine.
Story:
A system story, dealing with factions. A character hearing a voice, uncertain at first. At first thinking that he is crazy, someone speaking to him through mana. This being a system, who teaches him about the type of world there is. Varying types of people, those who are fearful of others of a higher standing. Some that would scam, it goes on and on. Shifting into some focus of its cultivation aspect, such as the reasoning for awakening. It is more slow paced, so the starting part of the story is really just ironing out details. This is not bad to say, getting into stuff about a tournament, an elixir, etc.
Character:
One who befriends a system it looks like, getting more of guidance to say. As he witnesses how things are in the world. If I am following this correctly. Pretty funny, and can be clever on top of this. This is definitely a unique take on things, given how it is put together.
Overall,
I’ll say it is a solid read, can take a bit of time to get into. Though what is there, I believe others can find it an entertaining read. Give it a go and see for yourself on this. It has its own charm to it, and one worth giving a look at.
