Alan CHARLTON

"Alan Charlton is an artist who makes a grey painting."

The art of this British artist departs from a formal vocabulary established from the early 1970s. From his earliest works, the so-called Square Hole Paintings, his work has consisted exclusively of gray monochromes. He gives particular importance to the color of gray, which is always a unique tone due to the addition of several colors, applying it in several uniform layers and taking care to preserve the texture of the canvas. Alan Charlton's approach could be compared to that of the minimalists by renouncing all narration and valuing the process of developing the work. His works generate a rhythm that allows the gaze to escape the amorphous character of classic monochrome space. They also reveal the interaction of the painting with the wall and the exhibition space. A physical and sculptural dimension thus emerges from his work, which can only be understood once the paintings are hung.
