Alginic acid sodium salt is a polysaccharide widely utilized in materials science and biotechnology research due to its biocompatibility and gel-forming properties. In materials science, it is often employed as a matrix for encapsulation studies, where its ability to form hydrogels at mild conditions is particularly advantageous for immobilizing cells or bioactive compounds. It also plays a role in the development of biodegradable films and fibers, which are of interest for their potential applications in sustainable materials. In biotechnology, alginic acid sodium salt is used in the study of chemical delivery systems, helping researchers to create controlled release formulations. Moreover, this compound is a key component in the field of tissue engineering, where it serves as a scaffold material for cell culture and the formation of tissue-like structures. The sodium salt form enhances its solubility in water, facilitating its use in a variety of experimental setups.

KimKim, HS. et al. (PubMed 25842118) performed the phosphorylation of sodium alginate salt (NaAlg) by using H3PO4/P2O5/Et3PO4 followed by acid-base reaction with Ca(OAc)2 to give phosphorylated Alginic acid calcium complexes (CaPAlg), as a water dispersible alginic acid derivative. The modified alginate derivatives including phosphorylated alginic acid (PAlg) and CaPAlg were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for (1)H, and (31)P nuclei, high resolution inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. -SCBT Publication Review
