Ceftiofur is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic for used in veterinary medicine. It is resistant to antibiotic resistance enzyme beta-lactamase. Ceftiofur possesses the ability to bind to and deactivate penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) situated on the inner cell membrane of bacterial cell walls. These PBPs play a crucial role in the construction and shaping of bacterial cell walls during growth and division. Inactivating PBPs results in a reduction of cross-linkage and rigidity in the peptidoglycan chain, which is vital for strong and rigid bacterial cell walls. As a consequence, the bacterial cells undergo lysis and their cell walls weaken.
