    Accomplishments

    Major achievements

     The IARI has the distinction of evolving the largest number (155) of rose varieties of
    different group like Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Grandifloras, Miniatures and Climbers in
    the country possessing desirable traits.
     A chocolate brown coloured rose hybrid Mohini attracted the attention of rose breeders
    across the globe. Induced mutants viz., Abhisarika, Striped Christian Dior, Pusa
    Christina and Madhosh: natural mutants Chitra, Pusa Abhishake, Climbing Sadabahar,
    Climbing Dr.Homi Bhabha, Delhi Pink Pearl and Nav Sadabahar exhibit unique spectrum
    of patterns and are well received by the garden enthusiasts.
     I.A.R.I is the first to send the trial consignment of roses to Frankfurt and Amsterdam in
    1969 with the collaboration of State Trading Corporation. These consignments were
    well-accepted in global markets.
     For higher yields, the best planting time recommended for North Indian plains is
    October-November. A root stocks namely Rosa indica var odorata was identified and
    recommended for northern plains for mass multiplication of elite cultivars using T-
    budding.
     The Division has established the in vitro regeneration and proliferation of micro-shoots in
    rose and chrysanthemum.
     The Division has the distinction of developing the DUS test guidelines for the first time in
    the country to obtain plant breeders/farmers rights for the newly evolved rose,
    chrysanthemum, and marigold varieties.
     The Division of Floriculture and Landscaping, IARI, New Delhi achieved a significant
    breakthrough by standardizing reliable protocol for in vitro induction and expression of
    anthocyanin pigments from callus cultures of rose cv. Pusa Ajay.
     IARI has the unique distinction of having the largest collection (160) of gladiolus
    genotypes in the country and 41 varieties have been developed through conventional
    breeding tools.
     An improved variety of Amaryllis named as Suryakiran with red and white bicolour
    flowers has been released for commercial cultivation.

     Four F1 hybrids of Hollyhock namely, Pusa Apricot Supreme, Pusa Pastel Pink, Pusa
    Pink Beauty and Pusa Yellow Beauty were developed. In addition to these hybrids,
    seven open pollinated varieties namely Dulhan (red), Deepika (light yellow), Gouri (pink),
    Pusa hollyhock Gulabi (pink), Pusa hollyhock Krishna (maroon), Pusa hollyhock Lalima
    (red), and Pusa hollyhock Shweta (white) were released.
     Three improved open-pollinated varieties namely, Pusa Narangi Gainda (deep orange),
    Pusa Basanti Gainda (sulphur - yellow) and Pusa Bahar ( Yellow) of African marigold
    and Pusa Arpita of French marigold have been developed and released for commercial
    cultivation.

     Two radio mutants of chrysanthemum, Pusa Anmol with yellowish pink flowers (Gamma
    ray induced mutant of cv. Ajay) and Pusa Centenary with yellow flowers (Gamma ray
    induced mutant of cv. Thai Chen Queen) are developed and released by the Delhi
    Government. Applications have been filed for seeking the Plant Breeders Rights for both
    the varieties with PPV&FRA.

     Pusa Anmol is photo and thermo- insensitive and therefore flowers thrice in a year (Oct-
    Nov, Feb-Mar and May-Jun). It is commercialized with M/S Lead Better Seeds Pvt Ltd.,
    Hyderabad.
     The division has also developed four new varieties namely Pusa Aditya, Pusa
    Chitraksha, Pusa Kesari and Pusa Sona and identified by Institute variety release
    committee for state release.

     An isozyme profile of the cultivars has been documented and Bottom heat technique
    was developed for quick and high frequency rooting in winter season.
     The Division has released five varieties namely Pusa Shubam, Pusa Kiran, Pusa
    Manmohak, Pusa Vidush, Pusa Valentine, Pusa Srijana and Pusa Unnati of gladiolus
    were identified by Institute variety release committee for state release.

     Initiated research work on collection and evaluation of turf grasses, shrubs, climbers,
    etc. for different climatic conditions and various usages.

     Development of inbred lines and varieties rich in carotenoids has been initiated since
    2013.
     Research work has been initiated on development of pre breeding lines resistant to
    powdery mildew in Rose
     Initiated research work on characterization of major pigments , drying and storage
    techniques for high retention of pigments such as anthocyanin (Rose), carotenoids
    (Marigold) and betalins (Bougainvillea)
     Initiated research work on standardization of production technology of potted plants
