Functional
Impairment
Soft tissue pathology
Management of Acute Hemarthrosis
The goal of treatment à stop the bleeding as soon as possible
The most important initial step à Replacement of clotting factor
Rest /Immobilization (partial and temporary)
Ice packs
Compression (tolerable pressure bandage)
Elevation of the affected joint
NSAIDs
As soon as the pain and swelling begin to subside
à Change the position of the affected joint gradually
from a position of comfort to a position of function
à Gentle stretching & active muscle contractions to gain extension
Orthotic
• Bracing
• Splinting
Walking Aids
• Reduce axial loading
• Improve balance
Management of Chronic Haemophilic
Arthropathy
Physical therapy and rehabilitation main objective are :
- Strengthening muscles by isometric and isotonic exercise
- Preventing or treating contractures
- Increase exercise tolerance
- Improving proprioception
- Improving activity capability and return to activity

Conclusions
Incorrect posture habits, deformity, repeated joint/ muscle bleeding and
inadequate rehabilitation programs lead to muscular work imbalances and
recurrent musculoskeletal bleeding
Rehabilitation programs are essential to prevent recurrent hemorrhage,
worsening deformity & improve functional activity
Effective collaboration between doctors, therapists, families, and haemophilia
patients have a significant contributing role in this lifelong management
