Today, the 21st of March, is World Poetry Day. For 24 uninterrupted hours we are going to weave the
world with words of beauty and common sense at the same time that we denounce those who bring
destruction and violence to the Earth that we share with all other human beings, our animals, trees and
rivers, our houses, rocks and mountains. More than 300 poets will be today at La Casa de la Poesía with
the hope of giving ourselves and our fellow men and women, words and concepts that lift us above the
many difficulties we have experienced and continue to experience. Poets of the world: let’s unite to
dream together of a peaceful and truthful world. In the meantime, let’s rejoice listening to the voices of
the poetry of the Earth.
Camerado, this is no book,
Who touches this touches a man,
(Is it night? are we here together alone?)
It is I you hold and who holds you,
I spring from the pages into your arms—decease calls me forth.*

Στο δωμάτιό σου που κάναμε έρωτα Inside your room where we made love,
κυριαρχούσε ένα σκούρο, καφέ χρώμα, a deep brown color prevailed,
από τη μοκέτα, τα έπιπλα, τα σκεπάσματα. from the carpet, the furniture, the bedspreads.
Σχετικά σκοτεινά ήταν, It was relatively dark,
γιατί όταν μπήκα –απομεσήμερο, τέλη Μαΐου- since you had already lowered the blinds
είχες ήδη κατεβάσει τα ρολά, that late May afternoon when I walked in,
και οι κουρτίνες μπροστά στα παράθυρα and the curtains on the windows
δεν άφηναν κανένα φως. let no light through.
Σαν σκοτεινή σπηλιά και κρησφύγετο κολασμένων Your room resembled a dark cave,
έμοιαζε το δωμάτιό σου, the hiding place of the damned,
σε συνδυασμό με την ηδονή στο κρεβάτι. in league with the bed’s sweet bliss.
Μετά, όταν κατέβηκα στο δρόμο Later, down on the street,
και περπάτησα αρκετή ώρα, I strolled for quite some time,
το δυνατό και διάχυτο φως του Μαΐου, the strong diffuse light of May,
η πανδαισία των χρωμάτων παντού, the feast of colors all around,
και η ζεστή ατμόσφαιρα and the atmosphere ablaze,
που τόσο ταίριαζε με τη διάθεσή μου. which so much fit my mood.

Cum să trăiesc, Doamne, cu lumina ta, How can I live, oh, God, with Your light,

Ca prințul Mîșkin brusc ai vedea. Like Prince Myshkin you suddenly could see.

Ca Mîșkin sublimul, am aflat brusc totul Like the sublime Myshkin, I suddenly learned everything
despre grădina ta. Dimineața ochii mi-i pârjolea, about Your garden. In the morning it burned my eyes,
praf și pulbere mă făcea. Culori, linii, sunete, making me end in smoke and ashes. Colors, lines, sounds,
roze scurmând un tipar subit renăscut, roses unearthing an unexpectedly revived pattern
din care o lume de necrezut se-nvolbura. from which an incredible world started to swirl.
Abia respirând, din spaimele-mi vechi Hardly breathing, from my oldest fears
cineva pe vârful piciorușelor se înălţa. someone rose up on the tip of their little toes.
Cum să trăiesc, Doamne, cu lumina ta? How can I live, oh, God, with Your light?

Μα ποιοι άνθρωποι άραγε ποτέ τους συναντιούνται;

ISOLATION
Ten pebbles in the mouth and endless fears. Torn the viper’s page,
the sprouting of the century, the trees of the snowfall and the vertigo
of the wasp. With the dizziness of speed 5+2-4 and still haziness.
Time recurs, the cat ten teeth, your arid rug rolls on my body.
Alertness of flesh when the snow falls. Something good.
Latent though. Come out, snail, from the cracks. Cover with earth the fuse.
In difficulty you’ll remember the trembling jelly.
Of strawberry or desire, it’s the same thing.

Su riqueza se hace de la ausencia de escuelas Their fortune is made from the lack of schools
del temblor de hospitales crumbling hospitals
de cementerios superpoblados overcrowded graveyards
de jóvenes que en una esquina esperan and from street corner youths awaiting
la ruleta final del sacrificio. the final roulette of sacrifice.
Sin balance aquí estamos con la mirada extraviada Off balance here we are with a frozen look
sin poder saltar del mapa a la ruta. unable to leap from the map to the route.
Dónde la clave de la paz definitiva… Where is the key to definitive peace…

y el hastío de la violencia llueve lento. and the weariness of violence slowly rains

Merely dreaming of Supreme Good.

Yo no

PRELUDE IN C MAJOR
BWV 846, J. S. Bach
The first four measures of this little prelude it would have to be bar twenty-three,
are a microcosm of all that is to come, where all the notes are folded close together,
a nearly perfect, self-sufficient etude, coiled as tight and potent as a seed.
a journey to the dominant and home. And this, which holds such possibility,
Already Bach has set his constant texture just happens to immediately precede
of sixteenths rising in arpeggios. the pedal point, eight bars of harmony
The chords reveal and fold into each other, in grand, voluptuous flowering over G.
always hinging on their common tones
(perhaps just one, but sometimes even three) The pedal is long for such a compact piece,
and never dancing far on a single breath, and earthly time becomes merely a portal
yet somehow compassing the space between into infinity, the pedal G
this earth and heaven, or from birth to death, the sure, sustaining hand of the immortal
for so this prelude, in its compact grace, bearing us homeward to the mother key
does hold a world entire in its embrace. – as Bach’s great river courses to the sea.

SPUNE-MI
încă o dată, şi vei afla, No creíste

¿Llegar a dónde?
Si él ya está allí
aunque no pueda saber aún
que ha ganado.

SALSA
salsa sensual, salsa mestiza, salsa mulata, salsa sin par, salsa sangre trascendida;

Are you listening you are No not at all then ah the wind says
listening to the world the wind says as it fills
you think but you hear yourself in the threshing my arms and empties
over and over the dark tongue trees a south wind
glittering them remember
of world its hidden places among birch leaves this remember
stirring up you who
under trees beyond the lights the sycamore are carried away
darkness falling from your feet once again on the wind
so deep you could fall through it and long ago
the South Wind says
forever and how loud world filling the garden
is with night in the trees restlessly
like a roost of parakeets rising with sunlight
the dark tongue of world as the roses
bend beneath it
rising up through you as you
fall dear self dear lavish summer
lonely self falling silently promises
mouthing through sound burn red
along their branches
till the wind
breaks petals
over itself
like a wedding

One woman glints like a spark of fire in the ashes Una mujer camina a toda prisa sollozando,
Of her little house set on fire La pintura desteñida de una casa en la cabeza.
One woman scoops up her baby and flees to the border Una mujer sigue esperando en
Watching a fighter-jet swoop down Una estación donde no para ningún tren.
One woman sharpens the letters of the alphabet Una mujer con un halo de gusanos luminosos
And pulls out the fangs of the enveloping dark Camina en la oscuridad hacia las estrellas
One woman closes the door of her house with a bang, Una mujer se asegura de que sus alas estén en su lugar
Walks out and hums a medley on the street Antes de echarse a volar
One woman looks at the image of Jesus on the cross Una mujer entra en un maizal en sequía
And yells in agony, “Son, my darling son!”
One woman leaves her man on the panel Una mujer canta una canción haciendo un árbol frutal
In Khajuraho and finds her pleasure herself.

que lucen, como dedos, sus anillos: Víctima: el victimario que ha caído primero;
Duelo y esclavismo....

Run for your life… take whatever you can carry in your hands
Bring bread, even if it’s stale... don’t look back
That city from which you leave, you will never come back again
Leave the newspapers full of fake words
You will not see the faces of your neighbors anymore
Wandering you will go around the world
Through the sunflower fields, you will run with the dogs, you will sleep, the muddy
water of the springs you will drink, until the insatiable war dragons calm down
And the pits of anger are satiated... and death stops claiming customers
As long as your name does not appear on the lists of the disappeared
No one is looking for you, no one misses you, no one cries for you... everyone flees
for their life

IN MEMORIAM
Without a flickering candlelight of doubt,
somewhere that is always going to be everywhere,
the shutters against war are being raised.
At the same time, another war fires up and then
another, bent on obliterating all that is intolerable
inside the warmongers and grabbers themselves.
The naked young girl racing away from the bright
terror, aflame with napalm, searing, her eyes on fire.
You can hear cries countless that an attack on the
body of the earth is a relentless attack on life itself.
And this mother, her lost husband and her children,
her rage. Raising her fist to where heaven used to be,
this angry God, “I will never forgive you, don’t you
ever forget that it is the dark rage inside yourself,
that you rain down on our hearts and bodies.
How dare you. And the next war and the war after
that one, you must one day realise that you cannot
ever kill the light in the heart of memory.”

Me levanto
y Él no
Yo
que cambio
lo constante
Él
inmóvil

NIOBE
The sources mention different numbers of children, according to Ovid
seven sons and seven daughters (In 1996 in Dunblane, in the county of Perthshire, Scotland,
there were sixteen.)
In the crosshairs is the mother’s hubris. Apollo and Artemis take revenge
for the dishonored Leto (In Dunblane, the motive is unclear; the gunman Thomas Hamilton
finally shoots himself).
But the gods again take pity, they turn the mother to stone and
leave her the comfort of tears. (The parents of the murdered Dunblane children
somehow still survive, they know the darkness, their hearts are turned to stone).
As for what art does with this tale —
let us look at the sculpture of Niobe and her youngest daughter.
Of course, the ancient sculptor, perhaps driven by the dramaturgical
rule of not depicting violence, has spared us the very act of
murder, has also spared us the ekkyklêma with the children’s corpses.
The thing we see is Niobe, with her small girl — both
of stone, as if Apollo, here murderer, but still the patron
of the arts, for a moment spares the little one, the one Niobe tries
to wrap in her dress, to hide her, to birth her
back into herself. (One of the mothers of the surviving children
in Dunblane told of her relief when she saw her own child
among the living, and after that her consuming
guilt,
in that very moment she found herself
able to experience relief). A mother
is a stone that weeps.

Gopee girl, you’re a dog, I know, There was a time when I loved
But when you look at me sometimes, The fantastic fabrics of the mind.
I see your Master’s eyes looking out There was a time
Through yours. When I lived my life
You’re a portal, a host, an animated house, Based on culled fictions.
A window in a submarine There was a time
Providing peeks into a familiar world. When I was satisfied
Sometimes, Gopee, you’re much more With a fragment of reality,
Than you seem. Splintered, broken and smashed.
But now a lucid illumination
Steals into my heart.

ÓRBITA I

a menina improvável
1.
juízo e nele desenhava e anotava as tarefas e tudo
3.
Aurora.

O PRIMEIRO AMANTE1
FIRST LOVER
A naughty girl’s first lover is her pillowy dear. Years between the girl’s legs rubbing
and snuggling between the first hair coverings. Every night, the pillow listens to the
appeals, the favorite songs, whispers all the unspoken words and lies down with the
same old girl. It holds some of last night’s sweat and fever; it also saves the scent of
anti-dandruff shampoo, sometimes wet from the post-bath hair, sometimes from the
overnight rain. The pillowcases are changed, but the pillow is still there! A faithful lover,
soft and very discreet. So make no mistake, pioneers, the first lover of a naughty girl
is her pillowy dear. They have got married, crossing the same single bed for years.

She still remembers me, she strokes my face. Aún me recuerda, aún, y me acaricia.
She made me in her body’s deepest place De su más íntimo ser, fui la primicia.
and fed me from herself. I was her moon.
I comb her hair and feed her with a spoon La nutro a cucharadas, una por una.
and dress her in clean clothes.
she pats her empty purse with eager hands Le pasa la mano alegre a su bolsa vacía:
and walks about the grounds with me. She knows sabe que vamos al huerto. Conoce esta cosa,
but cannot always say this is a rose. pero no logra siempre nombrarla rosa.
The words she taught me are th4e words I see: Antaño, con su decir todo lo creó:
because she spoke the sun, it came to be; cuando ella dijo el sol, amaneció.
she called me out of nothing, and I came.
Will I still be when she forgets my name?

Hazme, vida, quizás tu pregonera Make me your herald, Life: send me ahead

PEQUEÑO AMOR
Tu dedo allí
no es tu dedo allí
no te creas

FLAME THROWER
A lefty,
the guns weren’t made for him
so he became a flame thrower:
flushing out fox holes that
couldn’t be cleared.
Children on fire
still rip through his dreams,
forcing him down to the kitchen chair
at three in the morning
for a cigarette, high-ball, and late movie.
Dead buddies...malaria...
teeth knocked in, words
shouted into arguments too often
to cut deeply when intended,
burn years later for a flame-thrower’s son.

ERATO
She half-opened the door and followed the avenue lights. The transactions were regulated, she
thought. It’s time to do my job. The night distinguished her, the darkness loved her. The feast of
Clidon has always been celebrated in the district. She stood at the fire she
encountered, made her cross and continued. Exclamations of triumph accompanied her: love
and voluptuous touches in her blood. Her favorite statues are mutilated. Then, dead birds and
brackish water. The ship “Erato” was leaving for Cyclades.
She was held by the handrail of the stairs. The honeysuckle reminded her that she once
submitted to the words, was left to their alms; they defalcated her the lover with the guitar.
Will he take me with him?

DEATHWISH
I want to be sweet and clear and free, as half a line haw, for instance, or luminary—
of Auden, or an episode of the Powerpuff Girls; hiding them in a snatch of prose…
I want to be dew, and honest with mine, passed over in silence
like Bob Marley, or Boesman the Boer. like Wittgenstein, no evidence
I want to swing and get it right for myself or Laura Riding,
at the speed of Pollock’s light, like Bharathiyar going mad composing,
I want to be deep like Zulu, I want to dissolve into our language
tight like Tamil, printing too little for my age;
and trust my sense of Sanskrit true I want to be obscure but not leaden,
with little shame for its will. flippant if I feel like it, then
I want to dabble in the fields I don’t mind being called poetically shitty
ignorant of what I was doing, in a note from Manohar Shetty,
rub myself on the ruins writing into the time we’ve borrowed,
with a self-induced disease singing from our utter boredom;
and gleefully lapse I want to hold in me the heat of my combustion
the hope to be heard. I want to fix and leave this sweat-smear as a resurrection:
my favourite English words I want to be sweet and clear and free,
into the forty-fifth century— insouciant, insufferable, just like me.

DRIFT
Passing underneath the cold and dismal street lights of a small town at night
Still, that wasn’t me drifting on the curve of the river today
April, when a bunch of crooked branches all bear thorny fruits
The curve of the river never ever runs dry. Tomorrow will be my turn to drift on it
Strange flags already line the streets of the town, everywhere a deluge of humanity
Drowning is the best way to end this, when all who drift reach the yonder shore
