APOCOPATION
OF ADJECTIVES
We express a simple negative in Spanish by
placing 'no' before the verb.
Los alumnos aprenden sus lecciones.
Los alumnos no aprenden sus lecciones.
When the object pronoun is used it always
is preceded by the negative.
Los alumnos no las aprenden.
There are other frequently used negative words such as:
Nadie - no one
Nadie esta hablando.
Nada - nothing
Nada tengo en la bolsa.
Nunca - never
Tomas nunca va a iglesia.
Ninguno - no ( used as an adjective), none
No tiene ningun dinero.
Ni...ni - neither... nor
No tengo ni lapiz ni bioligrafo
As we see in the examples above, in Spanish,
unlike English, allows for the use of more than
one negative in the sentence.
No tiene ningun dinero.
No tengo ni lapiz ni bioligrafo
Note that the no always comes before the
verb when the negative word comes after.
Here are some more examples:
Este hombre nunca dice nada a nadie.
No tiene ninguna idea.
If u were paying attention then u would
see that in the examples we showed you
the negative word ninguno looked
different. here are the examples again:
No tiene ningun dinero.
No tiene ninguna idea.
This is because, in Spanish, some
adjectives have a shortened form when
they precede a masculine singular noun.
They are:
Alguno - some
Ninguno - none
Primero - first
Tercero - third
Bueno - good
Malo - bad
Postrero - last
The adjectives alguno and ninguno carry a
written accent on the latter syllable of their
shortened form but all other forms of these
adjectives are regular.
Algun chico
El primer dia
Un buen libro
Un postrer deseo
The adjective grande has a shortened form gran when it
is placed before a masculine or feminine singular noun,
and in this case it conveys the meaning of great or famous
rather than big or large.
Un gran hombre
Una gran mujer
The adjective ciento drops the 'to' when followed by
another numeral except for mil and millon or when
followed by a noun.
Cien dolares
Cien sillas
Cien mil personas
Ciento dos
Lets refresh our memories
Nadie - no one
Nada - nothing
Nunca - never
Ninguno - no(as an adjective), none
Ni...ni - neither ... nor
There are two other common negative words:
Tampoco - the negative word to express
neither/either.
No me gusta el ron. - Ni a mi tampoco.
No juego al tenis - No lo juego tampoco. or
Yo tampoco.
Sino is used after a negative statement to
contradict it. In English it means but (rather).
Este hombre no es pobre sino rico.
